At last, designers and clothing manufacturers are waking up to the fact that country-loving females want to look smart and stylish in a jacket that is designed to blend in out in the field, walking the dog, watching the rugby, on the touchline supporting the kids playing sport and over drinks in the pub.

We asked around some female fieldsports fans to see what they look for in tweed shooting jackets for ladies. (Read more about why tweed is the original performance fabric.)

Kaylie Bloxham who runs a rural fashion and PR agency comments: “Of course you want a shooting coat that compliments your look, fits the female form, and empowers you to feel comfortable and confident, but that doesn’t mean a bright pink check! However beautiful the cut, it’s vital that it performs – this means a coat that is 100% waterproof, windproof, and lightweight to facilitate layering, with all the vital technical features, whilst simultaneously allowing exceptional movement. Brands like Schöffel Country have really listened to female feedback when it comes to designing tweed shooting jackets for ladies, with options that deliver both technically and aesthetically.”

PR for Orvis Claire Zambuni advises: “By all means dress to impress when you arrive and come back for lunch in more fitted styles, but make sure you have the full range of movement.” (You might like to read what ladies should wear shooting.)

Shooting Times contributor Ellena Swift says: “One of the things I love about any jacket is something called ‘resting pockets’. These pockets are slightly higher than the main ones and are perfect for keeping your hands warm and doing as they are named; resting.” (Here in our list of tweed shooting jackets for ladies we’ve called them handwarmer pockets.)

Selena Barr, Managing Director of Tweed Media says: “For me, a jacket has to be made from traditional herringbone tweed. I like the time-honoured design of the cloth and enduring sense of sporting style. But most importantly, when I am shooting I do not want to think about about my jacket ever. I want to focus on the task in hand. A poorly designed jacket will be on your mind all day, as you will feel cold, wet and uncomfortable. If a jacket has been designed correctly with a proper lining, then I won’t even register my body temperature. If it has a well-designed cut then I won’t think twice about swinging through, and if it has well-executed features such as large bellow pockets with tabbed openings then I feel unhindered as I reload. I also do not want to have to take out a second mortgage to buy a shooting jacket as every season an even more expensive version is launched. My go-to shooting jacket is The House of Bruar’s great value for money offering. “

Finally, when it comes to supporting local businesses, if you buy a British-made tweed jacket you’ll be doing your bit and supporting the sheep farmers who supply the wool.
